Samsung's information application may add satellite SMS function, which may be set as the default information application in the future.
According to CNMO, Google Messages is currently the default information application for overseas Samsung mobile phones, but Samsung has not given up its own Samsung Messages application. At present, Samsung is suspected to be developing satellite SMS functions for Samsung's information applications.
Foreign media said that a Reddit user found multiple code strings related to satellite-based emergency text messages in the latest version of Samsung's information application (16.1.02.2). Two of the strings show that Samsung is developing "satellite mode", which only supports text messages. In addition, RCS information cannot be used in this mode, and multimedia files such as pictures or videos cannot be attached to information sent through satellites.
It is understood that after Samsung temporarily removed RCS support two years ago, it has re-restored this function in Samsung information application. After that, Samsung seems to be developing more features for the app, such as birthday reminders, emoji reactions, real-time location sharing, Now Brief functionality.
Although Samsung has not yet provided satellite connectivity for emergency calls and information transmission like Apple does, it is likely to introduce these features to flagship phones in the future. And with Apple adopting RCS common configuration files on iPhones, Samsung may no longer need to rely on Google for RCS development. Samsung may continue to develop Samsung information apps, or even set it as the default information app for mobile phones and tablets.
