Earlier this year, analyst Jeff Pu predicted that the iPhone 17 Pro Max might feature a smaller Smart Island than the iPhone 17 Pro and other earlier models. Another source supported this view, suggesting that Apple might use "metal lens" technology to integrate the Face ID transmitter and receiver components, reducing the size and thickness of the structural components and ultimately reducing the size of the Smart Island.
There are also reports that the smaller Smart Island cutout will be applied to the entire iPhone 17 series. However, subsequent reports indicate that this change may not be implemented until the iPhone 18 Pro. Furthermore, regarding software, some leaks suggest that the iPhone 17 series will feature a redesigned Smart Island user interface, but specific details have not been disclosed.
If the Smart Island does indeed change on the iPhone 17 series, it will be the first change since it was first introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro series in 2022. Apple will hold a new product launch event on September 9th, themed "Awe Dropping," which will answer all these questions.
