Bloomberg's Mark Gurman announced tonight that Apple has lost another AI engineer. This marks the end of at least five Apple AI fundamental model engineers who have joined Meta's superintelligence lab in just over a month.
On July 8, Gurman confirmed that Meta had poached Ruoming Pang, head of Apple's AI team, and revealed his compensation package was worth over $200 million (IT Home Note: approximately 1.438 billion RMB at the current exchange rate).
On July 18, two other researchers from the team, Tom Gunter and Mark Lee, also joined Meta. Late last month, Bowen Zhang, head of Apple's Multimodal AI Research Institute, also joined Meta.
Gurman also announced that Floris Weers has left Apple, though he did not join Meta.
People familiar with the matter said Apple has given AFM employees a small raise in response to job offers from companies like Meta, but it's clear their compensation still lags behind what competitors are offering. Spokespeople for Apple and Meta declined to comment.
