AMD Ryzen X3D Owners Find a Way to Overcome Microfreezes in Games


AMD processors with 3D V-Cache, such as the Ryzen 7 7800X3D or 9800X3D, are considered some of the best for gaming thanks to their huge L3 cache. But even such chips allow unpleasant stutters and lags in games. It turned out that this can be fixed with simple manipulations.

The solution, as it turned out, is right in the BIOS settings. It is enough to manually activate the Global C-State Control parameter. By default, it is set to "Auto", but with X3D chips, this parameter is in "Disabled" mode. And this, in turn, prevents Windows from properly managing the cores, especially on dual-crystal (CCD) processors, where V-Cache is available only on one of them.

The C-State function is responsible for energy saving, "putting to sleep" unused parts of the processor. However, when Windows cannot correctly determine which cores should be active for games, delays and jerks occur. Enabling this setting eliminates freezes and helps the system distribute the load better.

The test showed that in synthetic tests like AIDA64 the result may not change, but in real games many users have already noted a positive effect. This is especially true for those who have automatic core management (CPPC) enabled and who have noticed problems with choosing a "gaming" core.

In addition, users of the MSI Afterburner utility are advised to disable the "Power Percentage" metric, which also helps get rid of microlags.
