Waymo accelerates expansion across the United States: Returns to New York road testing, adds 80 square kilometers to California service area

It is reported that Waymo, an autonomous driving company under Google's parent company Alphabet, is accelerating its expansion in the US market. On June 20, it announced that it would return to New York City to start road testing and simultaneously expand its California service area by 80 square kilometers. This move marks a further acceleration of its commercialization process. At present, its autonomous driving fleet is mainly composed of Jaguar I-Pace models equipped with lidar, 360-degree panoramic cameras and radars, which improve driving safety through multi-sensor data fusion.
It is worth noting that Waymo's business growth momentum is strong. On May 24 this year, it announced that it had completed 10 million unmanned paid trips, covering four major cities including Austin and Los Angeles-it took only five months to cross the milestone from 5 million to 10 million. Previous data showed that the company's weekly orders for autonomous taxis have exceeded 100,000 orders, surpassing the 75,000 weekly orders of China's leading platform Carrot Run.
At the same time, Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana emphasized that the company is building a sustainable business model: while ensuring safety, it simultaneously promotes profit goals and technical cost optimization. This strategy is gaining capital support, with parent company Alphabet investing an additional $5 billion this year to help it maintain its leading position in the world of autonomous driving. With the gradual implementation of services in the San Jose and San Francisco airport areas, Waymo's service network across the United States will form a more complete closed loop.
