the remake trilogy of tomb raider iv-vi was released earlier this year, and minor patches have been continuously distributed to address the issues. however, unfortunately, one of these patches added narration illegally generated using neural networks. this act infuriated the woman whose voice was "stolen" by the developers.
in august, a minor update for the second installment of the tomb raider trilogy "restored some lines and fixed some muffled voices". subsequently, françoise cadol, who voiced lara croft in the french localization of the game and in the angelina jolie-starred film "tomb raider", accused aspyr of using her past recordings to create new narrations for tomb raider iv-vi without her permission. according to cadol, the studio imitated her voice using ai without her consent. portuguese artist raine bastos also filed a similar complaint, claiming that her voice was also synthesized using neural networks.
cadol issued a cease-and-desist order against aspyr for illegally using her voice in the narration until the issue was resolved, and sued the company. initially, the developers of the remake refused to comment, but in september, one month after the scandal broke out, they released a patch that removed the "unauthorized ai content".
it's worth noting that the developers directly apologized to bastos and claimed that the voice generation using neural networks was the responsibility of a "third-party contractor".
