Sony announced today that it will increase the prices of all three PlayStation 5 consoles in the US market starting August 21st, with the Standard Edition, Digital Edition, and Pro Edition all seeing a $50 increase. This marks Sony's latest adjustment to its console pricing strategy, following price increases in Europe, Australia, and other markets in April.
According to the official announcement, the PS5 Standard Edition will cost $549.99 (approximately RMB 3,951), the Digital Edition will cost $499.99 (approximately RMB 3,592), and the Pro Edition will cost $749.99 (approximately RMB 5,388). Notably, this price increase only applies to the console itself; accessories like controllers and headphones remain unchanged. Sony explained in a statement that the price increase was primarily driven by increased US import tariffs and changes in the global economic environment.
Sony had already hinted at possible US price adjustments back in May. Similar to Sony, Microsoft has also previously raised the prices of its Xbox consoles and accessories, with the Xbox Series X Digital Edition now priced the same as the standard PS5. Industry analysts believe that the game console market is facing rising cost pressures, and price adjustments may become an industry trend.
This price increase may affect US consumers' purchasing decisions, but considering that PS5 accessory prices remain unchanged, the overall cost of the gaming ecosystem remains competitive. Sony emphasizes that it will continue to provide a high-quality gaming experience, and price adjustments are necessary to respond to market changes.
