At the opening night event of Gamescom 2025, the Game Science team officially unveiled "Black Myth: Zhong Kui" with a CG trailer imbued with Eastern aesthetics, presenting the second installment in the Black Myth series to global players. This single-player action role-playing game, based on the Chinese folk tale "Zhong Kui Catches Ghosts," continues the innovative interpretation of traditional culture from its predecessor, "Black Myth: Wukong." The trailer's line, "Drawing up the sword, we must distinguish between the clear and the turbid," paired with the ink-and-wash-style graphics, evokes a unique, supernatural, and martial arts theme.
According to Game Science's official website, the project is currently in early development, and no gameplay has been shown yet. The team stated that they chose Zhong Kui as the new protagonist in hopes of creating a more differentiated gaming experience following the success of "Black Myth: Wukong." The team aims to retain the series' signature action-RPG gameplay while also innovating in its worldview, narrative, and gameplay features. Notably, all official social media accounts have been renamed "Black Myth," and future series information will be released through this centralized channel.
While a release date remains uncertain, the game has officially been confirmed for PC and major consoles. Judging by the art style showcased in the trailer, the game is likely to continue the previous game's unwavering commitment to Chinese aesthetics while exploring more complex social allegories through the character of Zhong Kui, who embodies both divine and human qualities. As development progresses, this title, embodying the team's commitment to "refreshing change and innovation," is expected to further reshape players' perception of domestic AAA games.
