Microsoft recently confirmed a serious bug in its August cumulative update, KB5063875, causing some Windows 10 devices to experience the 0x8007007F error code during the Windows 11 upgrade process, forcing the upgrade process to be interrupted. According to technology media outlet borncity, the issue primarily affects upgrades from Windows 10 versions 1809 to 22H2 to Windows 11 22H2/23H2, and also impacts multi-version migrations of the Windows Server series.
Even more worryingly, this update also triggered a cascading failure in the system reset function. Whether running Windows 11 23H2/22H2 for individual users or LTSC 2019/2021 versions relied upon by enterprise customers, critical operations such as "Reset this PC" and "Repair Updates" were unable to be performed. Microsoft has issued a notice on its official Health Console, acknowledging that these issues have had a substantial impact on daily operations.
Microsoft has implemented a two-pronged response: a patch released on August 15th addresses the 0x8007007F issue, while a dedicated patch for the reset functionality malfunction is planned for release via the emergency update channel in the coming days. Affected users are advised to postpone upgrading and retry after the patch is released. This incident highlights the potential compatibility risks associated with large-scale system updates. Whether Microsoft can complete the fix within the promised timeframe will directly impact the progress of its operating system upgrade plan.
