Amazon announces $20 billion investment in AI data center

Recently, Amazon announced that it will invest 20 billion Australian dollars (about 93.3 billion yuan) to expand Australia's data center infrastructure between 2025 and 2029, setting a record for the largest public technology investment in the country's history. This huge amount of money will be used to expand server capacity, upgrade operation and maintenance, and enhance artificial intelligence computing power, directly supporting the Australian government's strategic goal of promoting AI technology to empower economic development.

At the same time, Amazon simultaneously launched a clean energy support plan, announced investments in three new solar power plants in Victoria and Queensland, and pledged to purchase more than 170 megawatts of green electricity. This not only provides sustainable energy guarantees for data centers, but also complements Amazon's previous eight wind and photovoltaic projects in Australia to build a low-carbon technology ecosystem38. It is worth noting that the scale of this investment far exceeds its £8 billion data center plan in the UK last year, highlighting Australia's strategic position in the global AI competition.

Amazon AWS CEO Matt Garman emphasized in a statement that the plan will help Australian companies of all sizes seize generative AI opportunities, and declared: "Artificial intelligence is a once-in-a-decade change, and Amazon will enable all Australians to achieve large-scale innovation through this investment." He particularly pointed out that the dual initiatives of expanding world-class infrastructure and promoting renewable energy projects are in response to Australia's vision of becoming a global AI leader.

This investment is expected to significantly enhance Australia's cloud computing service capabilities, provide more powerful AI model training support for local companies, and accelerate the country's transformation from a resource-based economy to a technology-driven economy. As multinational technology giants continue to increase their computing power infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region, Amazon's move may further trigger a global data center construction competition.
