Last week, reports suggested that Apple's next-generation Vision Pro headset would feature an M5 chip, rather than an M4. However, this isn't a sure thing. Sources have revealed that the Apple Vision Pro 2 could still use the M4 chip.
In September 2024, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the Apple Vision Pro 2 would feature an M5 chip and support Apple Intelligence features. However, in February 2025, Apple added support for Apple Intelligence features to the current Vision Pro. Recently, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reported that the second-generation Apple Vision Pro will actually use the M4 chip.
If the Vision Pro 2 does indeed use the M4 chip, which is a generation behind the latest generation, it would be similar to the original model. The original Vision Pro used the M2 chip, even though the M3 had already been released.
Recent code suggests the Vision Pro 2 will use the M5 chip, but the possibility of the M5 is not zero. In his latest "Power On" newsletter, Gurman stated that he continues to hear that Apple is testing a version with the M4 chip, and that the company is likely considering both chips simultaneously.
What exactly does the M5 chip bring to the Vision Pro 2 that the M4 can't? In reality, both the M4 and M5 offer significantly higher performance than the M2. However, as Gurman noted, speed isn't currently the bottleneck for Apple's Vision Pro.
Apple's Vision Pro headset is currently underperforming for two main reasons: its high price of $3,499 (approximately RMB 25,150 at the current exchange rate) and a lack of compelling features.
Gurman also stated that Apple is unlikely to significantly improve the Vision Pro in the short term. The next generation, expected to be released as early as this year, will likely feature a faster chip. A more significant upgrade is expected in 2027, when Apple will release a cheaper and lighter model.
