A corresponding statement from the Russian Press Service appeared in Russian media. Reportedly, the department has officially taken measures to restrict voice calls on foreign messengers.
"We inform you that, in order to combat criminals, based on information from law enforcement agencies, measures are being taken to partially restrict calls on these foreign messengers. No other restrictions on their functionality have been imposed," a Roskomnadzor representative said.
The department cited law enforcement data as the reason for the blockade, citing cases of fraud and extortion of Russian citizens using foreign messengers. Furthermore, according to Roskomnadzor, voice services Telegram and WhatsApp are being used to engage in illegal activities.
UPD: The Ministry of Digital Transformation stated that access to the Telegram and WhatsApp messenger services will be restored if they comply with Russian legislation.
